Foxhole Partner

From doing a quick internet search, I see I’m not alone in using the analogy of the terms foxhole partner or foxhole buddy when describing a really close, loyal, devoted relationship. This type of relationship is extremely valuable and precious.

Much like the expectations of two military members in a foxhole together during battle, foxhole partners or foxhole buddies have each other’s back. It’s impossible to be able to see behind yourself, and to be able to cognitively manage everything alone. But with a foxhole buddy, you’re with someone else who will

  • share missions, goals, and strategies with you

  • be sincere

  • be trustworthy

  • give their 100 percent

  • manage half of the space

  • consider you, and your shared missions and goals, in his/her decisions

  • use his/her gifts and skills for your shared efforts

  • protect him/herself

  • protect you

  • cover your back

  • represent you in areas, places, situations and ways where you are unable or unavailable to represent yourself

  • handle situations that you are unable to reach or manage

While your foxhole buddy is doing all of this for him/herself and for you, you’re doing the same things for yourself and for him/her. Doing life this way, with a foxhole buddy, creates a deep connection and gives security and ease in life.

When you are in a troubled relationship, you double your work as someone who is alone: not only do you have to manage life and it’s challenges alone, but you also have to be careful of the person with whom you’re in a relationship and any extra stress that alone adds to your life. In this case, emotionally-detaching is important in order to preserve your emotional and mental energy.
