“Don’t Worry, People Seldom Think of You”

Have you heard the quote that says, "You’ll worry less about what people think of you when you realize how seldom they do."? *

That quote bothers me because, in my experience, this is actually false. I wish it were true when it came to people who didn’t and don’t really love and respect me. Unfortunately, those kind of people were the exact people who thought of me way too much. They thought of me enough to gossip about me, back-stab me, smear my character, overtly choose to exclude me, gaslight and trick me, hide information from and lie to me.

And I’ve witnessed plenty of people doing these sort of behaviors towards other people as well.

What’s better is the advice to just “Let them.” Mel Robbins coined that phrase and even wrote a book with the Let them phrase as its title.

People will think all sorts of things about you. They will think of you when they need a scapegoat. They will think of you when they need a superficial way to feel superior. They will think of you when they want to distract themselves and others from the truth. And on and on.

Let them think whatever they want to about you.

What people think of you is none of your business.

* (It seems no one is able to nail down who authored this quote, so I can’t give credit to the source, unfortunately.)
